Jim Bengston is an American photographer and visual artist living in Norway. He grew up in the Chicago area, studied literature at Lake Forest College (1964), and later attended Princeton University. He was stationed in Bavaria in 1967–68 while serving as a photo assistant in the U.S. Army, and worked as a photo editor for the Associated Press in New York. In 1970, he moved with his family to Norway and worked as a copywriter, translator, and photographer at Young & Rubicam before becoming a freelance photographer in 1975. Bengtson has had a number of solo exhibitions in several countries and has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including the Autumn Exhibition and the Fotografisk Spring Exhibition. Bengtson’s photographs have been acquired by several collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Museum of American Art (Smithsonian) in Washington, D.C., the Henie Onstad Art Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Lillehammer Art Museum, and the Norwegian Cultural Council. Bengston has won first prize in Nikon’s International Photography Competition and received the advertising industry’s Gullblyanten award in Norway for his work during the 1994 Winter Olympics, where he photographed the Olympic posters. Bengston is affiliated with the photo agency Samfoto.
