Life in today’s urban society is a recurring theme in Åsdam’s art. His experimental works seek to uncover the city’s subconscious and the underlying structures that influence our personalities. Through film, video, and installation, Åsdam’s work depicts modern society, its psychological and material effects, and the daily grind, as well as how individuals adapt their identities and desires in response to society’s rules and organization. The distinctive quality of Åsdam’s films stems from his focus on space, history, and place. This is combined with a sense of subjectivity and language, as well as a blend of documentary and fictional narrative elements that drive the plot forward. Åsdam has exhibited internationally since 1998, including at New York’s PS1—a branch of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)—Tate Britain, Kunsthalle Bern, the Istanbul Biennial, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
