War and Conflict
Throughout history, photography has been used to document both the atrocities of war and their subsequent consequences for societies and civilians. Similarly, it has documented struggles for rights, equality, and the fight against poverty. As a medium of communication, photography has also played an important historical role in documenting events that have led to conflict and war, such as unrest and strife.
The Møller Collection also features a selection of images related to war and conflict.
Some of the photos are raw, others are purely documentary, and some are best regarded as artistic representations. Many photographers sometimes operate in the gray area between documentation and artistic representation. And when combined, this can create a very powerful effect. This often happens when the photographer, intentionally or unintentionally, presents atrocities and brutality through subjects that are intuitively perceived as beautiful. But upon closer reflection, the viewer discovers that the scene depicted can be interpreted in different ways.
Many photographs possess precisely this ability—to be interpreted from different perspectives. And often, the interpretation is influenced by the viewer’s own background and experiences.
